From 2015 to 2018 Fuer Sierra Leone e. V. funded a project to develop and expand water supply in the community of Hastings, a suburb of Freetown. The project was created in collaboration with Deutsche Welthungerhilfe e. V. and at the initiative of the Rotary Clubs Stuttgart-Flughafen, München-Königsplatz, Emmental and the Rotary Club Freetown. A water dam and existing water pipes were renovated, and parts of the municipality were connected to the water supply. The combined efforts resulted in an improvement in hygiene standards in the Hastings community which became particularly important during the Ebola epidemic. The Hastings dam was completed in December 2017: 3,500 people, a school and a hospital now have access to fresh water. The Hastings dam was handed over to the Hastings community in 2018. The next steps included checking the water quality, carrying out maintenance and finding a fee model for the residents.
